MY LIFE IN MY PICTURES :: A PHOTOGRAPHY BLOG

Inspired by Robert Franks The Americans I always wanted to travel across the USA and document the countrys state and its people in our -tough- times. The summer of 2010 has been my projected date ever since New Years eve 2008 and Im planning my trip as I write this blurb.

The experience of doing a road trip by car appealed to me at first, but I think of it as a very solitary experience and decided to put a different spin on my trip across the country. I will mostly utilize public transportation, namely the Amtrak and busses to meet people and interact with them; after all the human element is what makes my photographs speak to the viewer.

Leica M9, Summicron-M, 35/2

Well, that was a great day. Robbee and me went to Mainz to the Minikina. We had a great day checking tons of photography stuff. The people at the LEICA point gave us a M9 for 30 minutes and I had a SD card with me. So I shot the hell out of this ragefinder camera. For me it was such a big moment because I don´t think that I will ever own a M9. I know how a ragefinder works because I use a LEICA CL the most of the time, so it was easy for me to get used to a digital version. A great camera, small, easy to use, fast and well designed. So here are some pictures of that day at the Minikina and my lucky 30 minutes withe LEICA M9.

This pictures reminds me a bit to a picture of Anthony Suau.
The winner of the WORLD PRESS PHOTO 2009
Here is the picture.

Took a lot of shots the last weeks. Had no time to post them. Played some gigs with different bands and between the rehearsals and shows I sometimes have time to take some pictures. I took more pictures on the road with my digital camera. So, this is the post of my scanned Neopan 400 negatives. I took very much digital pictures with my LX3 from some gigs and trips. I´ll post the best of them in the next post. Here is the analog stuff. Click the picture for a bigger view and the description.

I really like this documentary about street photography. I get inspired every time I watch this. But be careful, this videos make you want to buy a Leica. I think a M6, MP or the new digital M9 is the best tool for this kind of photography. Im not a professional photographer and I don´t know much about flash and light installations, so for me one the biggest challenge is to learn which setting I need for the current light situation. You really have to know your camera. These guys in the video know how light works and they know how it looks later on film (or file). But there is more than that. There is a feeling for the right moment, an instinct to know what´s happening next or the chance that something could happen. They combine shapes and things or words and situations. I like this kind of documenting the real life on the street. It makes you look deeper into the chaos and it makes you finding or seeing moments that normally  nobody would notice.

In this video you’ll see the work of the photographers Chris Weeks, Severin Koller, Frank Jackson and Mario Anzuoni, all with different perspectives for shooting street photography.

It was a very nice sunday. First warm day in this year I think. I had time and 4 rolls of Neopan 400. I took the LEICA CL and the Olympus OM-2 with a 50mm and a 24mm glass. The pictures are sometimes a little bit overexposed, I found out that overexposing is good for night pictures, but not for a sunny day. ;) ! Sorry for the wrong order of the pictures, I had not the time to sort them. I walked from Mannheim Neckarstadt to the Jungbusch area and then into the city (Quadrate).

Bought 2 rolls of Fuji Superia 400 and took some pictures in Heidelberg and Mannheim. Compared the negative scans to cheap ROSSMANN 400 film. I have to say there IS a difference. I really like the Superia colours. The ROSSMAN film has much more red and the Superia looks more neutral to me. So, I DON`T think that ROSSMANN 400 film ist the same as Fuji Superia! Here are some ROSSMANN Scans.
And here the Superia pictures taken with a LEICA CL, Summicron-C, 40mm, scanned with a CANON 8800f.
